SafeStart is a nonprofit organisation implementing a Community-Based Chlorine Access (CBCA) model in rural Kano State, Nigeria. Our programme distributes low-cost chlorine solution to households through a network of community-based redemption agents, with the goal of increasing safe water consumption and reducing waterborne disease. The model is backed by a randomised controlled trial. We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Operations Manager Location: Remote Contract Type: Full-time Reports To: Co-founder Role Overview Our whole model rests on delivery, and delivery rests on strong operations. Chlorine only reaches households if procurement, supply, payments and people systems work every day. The Operations Manager leads finance, procurement, supply chain, people operations and compliance across the US and Nigeria, and is a core part of how SafeStart delivers and grows. We're early enough that you'll set up many of these processes yourself, not just follow them. The role suits someone who likes clean systems, gets things finished, and is comfortable being the person who knows where everything is. Responsibilities Finance Operations: Run payments, reimbursements, per diems and field cash management, following approved budgets and controls. Keep the books up to date in Xero: coding, bank reconciliations, receipts and month-end close. Produce monthly budget-versus-actuals reports and cash forecasts, and flag variances early. Prepare the financial parts of donor reports and help with audits and grant compliance. Procurement & Supply Chain: Manage chlorine procurement, deliveries and third-party warehousing in Kano, including stock reconciliations against distribution data. Run procurement for equipment, services and consultants: quotes, contracts, purchase records and value for money. Keep the asset register and track equipment issued to field staff. Manage event procurement, planning and bookings. People Operations: Handle contracts, onboarding, off-boarding and personnel files for staff and consultants in Nigeria, working with our employer-of-record and partner organisations. Coordinate payroll inputs, leave records and HR policies. Support recruitment logistics: posting roles, scheduling, reference checks and offers. Compliance, Systems & Admin: Track statutory filings and registrations in the US and Nigeria, including Nigerian data protection (NDPA) requirements, working with our legal advisors. Maintain our Microsoft 365 setup: SharePoint structure, user accounts, permissions and templates. Keep policies, SOPs and document control current as we grow. Take on operations work for new programmes as SafeStart expands. Executive Support: Manage the co-founders' diaries across time zones (US, Nigeria, South Africa). Schedule and prioritise meetings with partners, donors, government and the team. Book and coordinate travel for the co-founders and staff: flights, accommodation, ground transport, visas and security check-ins. Keep costs within the travel policy and budget. Prepare for key meetings. Circulate agendas and papers in advance, take notes where needed, and track actions and follow-ups to completion. What We're Looking For Essential: At least 4 years in operations, finance or grants management, ideally at an NGO, social enterprise or donor-funded programme. Hands-on bookkeeping experience in Xero or similar, and confident in Excel: reconciliations, budgets, forecasts. Experience with procurement and with supply or inventory management. Very organised and precise, and you finish what you start. You set up systems rather than working around them. Clear written English, and comfortable working remotely with little supervision. Reliable internet and power where you're based. Desirable: Experience operating in Nigeria (payments, procurement, statutory requirements) or across several countries. Experience with US nonprofit finance or donor compliance. Experience with Microsoft 365 or SharePoint admin, or automation tools.

Our programme distributes low-cost chlorine solution to households through a network of community-based redemption agents, with the goal of increasing safe water consumption and reducing waterborne disease. The model is backed by a randomised controlled trial. Most proven health solutions don't fail because the evidence is weak. They fail because no one has worked out a practical way to deliver them. That's the gap SafeStart exists to close, starting with chlorine in Kano and growing into an accelerator for other proven interventions. In 2027 we're also testing how CBCA can move into routine government delivery, working with the Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (MLGCA). You'll oversee Field Coordinators across all active LGAs, and through them the Field Officers. This is a senior role that needs both strategic programme management and close attention to operational detail. You're accountable for a reliable service in every community, the integrity of our field data, our community relationships, and the safety and performance of the whole field team. Responsibilities Field Operations and Programme Delivery: Plan and manage all field activity against the annual plan, including community launches, routine monitoring visits and M&E survey rounds, so communities are visited on schedule. Oversee Field Coordinators across Albasu, Bunkure, Kura, Dawakin Kudu, Kiru, Rano and any future LGAs, including providing direction, performance feedback and escalation support. Make sure every redemption point stays open, stocked and well run, including how agents are recruited, trained and supported. Plan and oversee community demonstration events as new communities are onboarded, working with Field Coordinators on logistics and delivery. Manage the budget and schedule for town crier engagements across all active communities, in coordination with Field Coordinators. Conduct regular field visits to observe team performance, check quality and maintain direct community relationships. Supply Chain and Logistics: Plan chlorine stock and distribution from storage to redemption points. Forecast needs and prevent stock-outs, working with the Operations Manager on procurement. Keep accurate stock records and reconcile them regularly against distribution and redemption data. Manage transport, vehicles, fuel and field equipment, including tablets. Manage field budgets, including transport, per diems, equipment and community demonstration costs, and report against approved allocations. Data Quality Assurance: Implement and oversee the data quality protocol across all survey rounds, including back-checks and re-interviews where necessary. Work closely with the Data Analyst to review incoming SurveyCTO submissions and resolve field-level anomalies. Act on findings from the Senior Field Trainer and QA Officer's independent spot-checks. Review and sign off on field data reports before submission to leadership. People and Safety: Recruit, onboard and train field staff, working with the Senior Field Trainer and QA Officer. Set clear targets, hold regular check-ins, and handle performance and disciplinary issues fairly and promptly. Own field security: monitor risks, plan around elections and unrest, keep track of staff whereabouts, and make sure incidents are reported. Make sure field staff follow SafeStart's safeguarding, consent and data protection procedures, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA). Stakeholder and Community Engagement: Maintain strong relationships with LGA-level government contacts, traditional and community leaders, redemption agents and partners. Represent SafeStart in field-level coordination meetings. Escalate community or security issues to leadership promptly and propose mitigation measures. Programme Support: Report weekly to leadership on progress against plan, problems, and decisions needed. Contribute operational knowledge to the design and testing of new SurveyCTO survey instruments. Advise leadership on community selection, staffing requirements and logistical feasibility as the programme scales. We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Data Analyst Location: Remote (Nigeria or South Africa) Report to: Co-founder Role Overview This is a technical, hands-on role working at the intersection of field data collection, automated data cleaning, and impact measurement. You will own the data systems that underpin our monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework - from raw SurveyCTO submissions through to clean datasets, dashboards, and the analytical outputs used in donor reporting and programme decision-making. The role suits a technically strong analyst comfortable in Python or R, rigorous about data quality in low-resource field settings, and confident working independently on a small, high-performing team. Importantly, SafeStart is a newly founded nonprofit that operates nimbly - we seek candidates who are resourceful, entrepreneurial, and comfortable building systems and processes from the ground up. We are not an organisation that wants you to pretend you can do it all. We are flexible in the skills the candidate can bring, and we are comfortable to outsource some skills if required. If you are excellent at statistical analysis but not too comfortable editing our Supabase backend, we can craft the role in this way. Note too that some of what follows is data-engineering work that is largely built already and fairly stable, once the pipeline is running it needs maintenance rather than constant building, so do not be put off by the technical infrastructure items if your strength is analysis and M&E. Responsibilities Data Pipeline & Infrastructure: Maintain and extend the raw/clean data architecture in Supabase (PostgreSQL), ensuring SurveyCTO submissions flow correctly through to raw and clean tables. Own the automated data-cleaning layer (a Python cleaner orchestrated through n8n) that validates and transforms raw submissions into clean tables, deploying updates through the existing version-controlled workflow. Keep SurveyCTO reference datasets (communities, agents, staff) in sync with source files as the programme scales. Design and maintain SurveyCTO XLSForms for all M&E data collection instruments, ensuring reliability under poor rural connectivity conditions. Build automations (in n8n) to trigger WhatsApp / email / Microsoft Teams alerts based on set programme factors. M&E System Build & Maintenance: Manage parallel monitoring tracks for new and existing communities as defined in the M&E plan, including process-check-only visits at the specified interim rounds. Contribute to M&E calculations and study design where required. Where skills align, run ANCOVA-based analyses for programme evaluation. Manage the change-request queue: field staff submit requested updates to registered details (agents, leaders, communities); review, approve, and apply the approved changes to the reference datasets. Maintain the verification sampling logic that selects field visits for audit (audio audits, revisit calls, co-visits) at the agreed rates, and track the resulting audit tasks to completion. Design data entry and validation workflows that account for enumerators using paper-based forms, coordinating manual entry into digital systems accurately and on schedule. Data Quality & Analysis: Monitor incoming field submissions for completeness, plausibility, and consistency; flag anomalies to the Fieldwork Manager for follow-up. Produce clean datasets and summary outputs for each M&E survey round. Proactively interrogate data beyond routine reporting - surface patterns, anomalies, or emerging trends that have programme implications, even when not asked. Maintain a changelog for all dataset versions and cleaning rule updates, ensuring reproducibility. Reporting & Communication: Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards and visualisations presenting programme metrics to leadership, implementation partners, and donors. Configure alerts (via n8n to WhatsApp / email / Microsoft Teams) for field staff to surface data-submission issues in near real-time. Contribute data sections of donor reports, programme evaluations, and strategic planning documents. Qualifications Person Attributes: A problem-solver - finds a way through rather than waiting to be told how. Communicates clearly in writing and in conversation, including with non-technical colleagues. Flexible and open to receiving (and giving) feedback; comfortable working in a fast-moving environment. Curious and committed to doing good through evidence-based interventions. Technical Requirements: Bachelor's degree or higher in statistics, data science, economics, epidemiology, computer science, or a related quantitative field. Proficiency in Python or R (or both), including data manipulation and scripting for automated pipelines. Experience with relational data models and at least one database or data storage platform. Strong Excel skills, including complex formulas, named ranges, and multi-sheet workbook design. Abil
